These days there seems to be a “holiday” for just about anything. It’s probably no surprise that National Running Day takes the cake for being my favorite. This year, I headed out to Memorial Park to celebrate with the Houston Marathon Committee.

I love these type of events. They remind me why I love the sport so much. Running brings people of all walks of life together and this was certainly evident on June 3! There were men, women, people of all ages and running abilities who had come from across the Houston area. The common thread? Running.

When I was swimming competitively I felt the same community aspect that I love about running. I’m sure this is across the board in other sports tool. For me, the difference between swimming and running is the accessibility. You can run anywhere, anytime, and all you need is a decent pair of shoes!

When I first moved to Houston, running was my “in.” I’ve moved around quite a bit, but meeting new friends is never really that easy…unless you have a sport like running! I joined Kenyan Way within my first few months and immediately knew I’d found my people. My pace group “adopted” me, invited me to run outside of Kenyan Way workouts and to happy hours. For anyone moving to a ew city, joining a running group is one of the first things I’d recommend.
