Smyth has already had one Olympic experience: in 2002, when the Winter Games came to Salt Lake, he was in high school there at Judge Memorial Catholic. The school gave students two weeks to immerse themselves in the Games, and Smyth took one on biathlon, learning to cross country ski and shoot using a paintball gun. Got tickets to the gold medal round … Also benefited from the indoor track built around the ice at the Utah Olympic Oval … Older sister, Kathleen, earned a running scholarship to Boston College; in high school, her coach suggested Smyth try cross country to get fit for basketball season. He made cross country varsity wearing his basketball shorts … All-American at Notre Dame … Member of Mammoth Track Club, along with 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist Meb Keflezighi.
