Thousands of Houston area runners joined the Houston Marathon Committee at Memorial Park on Thursday, Sept. 22 for its annual Run for a Reason Kickoff Party! HMC staff, committee members, official charities, sponsors and runners-alike celebrated the start of race season with free food, drinks, music and fun activities for all ages.

Runners lined up early to pick up this year’s limited edition “In Training” T-shirts and Run for a Reason Under Armour performance shirts to show off their Houston Marathon pride. If you weren’t able to make it to the Kickoff Party, you can now order these shirts online here, and while you’re there, be sure to check out the rest of the 2012 race merchandise!

Attendees were also able to meet and learn more about the 57 nonprofits that are part of the 2012 Run for a Reason charity program, which provides each organization with a platform to raise awareness and educate others about their cause through the Chevron Houston Marathon, Aramco Houston Half Marathon, El Paso Corporation 5K and ABB Team Challenge. The program has a limited number of marathon and half marathon race entries available for 2012 so be sure to check out RunforaReasonHouston.org for details on how to secure your spot this January!

A special thanks to everyone who donated old running shoes! With your help, we were able to collect two full bins of shoes to benefit SEARCH Homeless Services, one of this year’s Run for a Reason official charities.

Thanks again for celebrating the start of race season with us and best of luck with your training!

We’ll see you at the start line in January!
