Oldest of eight siblings raised alone by their mother … After a chance encounter with Peter Rono, the 1988 Olympic gold medalist at 1500m, Cherobon-Bawcom began running and earned an athletic scholarship to Harding University in Arkansas, where she competed in the first real race of her life but went on to become a three-time NCAA Division II Champion and eight-time All-American. She graduated in 2005 with a degree in Health Care Management … Later studied nursing at Georgia Highlands College in Rome, GA … Sammy Lelei, winner of the 1995 Berlin Marathon, is an uncle … Her win at the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women, the USA 10K Championships race, gave her the USA Running Circuit Grand Prix title … Although she says she has not trained for a marathon until now, she knows how to win one: of the nine marathons she has run, she’s won eight of them … Married to Jay Bawcom … Became a U.S. citizen in November 2010 and received clearance to compete for the USA on Labor Day 2011.
