Gary Aultz will be running his twenty-third marathon in the memory of his father and brother. Aultz lost his father and brother to addictions, something he has to overcome in his life.

Aultz was born in Houston and lived here until he was nine-years-old, when his parents divorced. He would stay with his dad for every summer till the age of 14 after he moved to California with his mother and brother. After starting high school Aultz’s brother, who suffered from addiction, went to live with their father. His father had an addiction of his own, alcoholism.

“During my senior year in high school came that horrible day when I was told my Dad had taken his own life and just two short days later came the tragic news that my 19 year old brother had taken his own life as well,” Aultz said.

After hearing the news he decided not to return to Houston to attend the funeral services. Aultz turned to alcohol and abusing drugs as an angry and hurt man in high school. His addictions continued until he was 43 and was on the same path as his father and brother. Once he reached that point he attended his first Alcohol Anonymous meeting and has been sober for 13 years.

His life changed around and he met his wife, Lisa and married her seven years ago. Aultz started running as an outlet and hobby, which quickly grew into a passion that he shares with his wife. His wife will be running the Aramco Houston Half Marathon and they will be arriving in Houston early so they can visit his father’s and brother’s graves for the first time since their passing.
