ABOUT THE HOUSTON MARATHON COMMITTEE

The Houston Marathon Committee® (HMC) is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization that plans a multi-race running event (marathon, half marathon, and 5K). The HMC is overseen by a board of directors, 12 staff members, and approximately 7,000 race weekend volunteer positions.

Founded in 1972, the HMC is a founding member of Running USA and organizes the nation’s premier winter marathon, half marathon, and 5K, hosting over 300,000 participants, volunteers, and spectators on race day. Recognized by World Athletics, the Gold Label Chevron Houston Marathon has been the race site for three U.S. Olympic Trials Marathons. The Gold Label Aramco Houston Half Marathon has hosted 16 U.S. Half Marathon Championships. The HMC received Gold Label Certification from the Council for Responsible Sport from 2011 to 2020. The event also garnered the 2015 AIMS Green Award for industry-leading sustainability initiatives. Race weekend generates over $51 million in economic impact for the region annually and has raised over $43 million through the Run for a Reason Charity Program since its inception. The event is broadcast and streamed Live on ABC13, ESPN+, and Disney+ (with Disney Bundle Trio).

As a 501(c)4 nonprofit organization, contributions made to the HMC are not deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes.

Mission

The Houston Marathon Committee will promote, plan, organize and stage an annual multi-race running event that embodies the spirit and energy of the citizens of Houston, Texas. HMC will strive to make this event amongst the most highly respected of its kind, locally and nationally. Every person in the HMC will be committed to quality, integrity, and safety.

VISION

Our event will continue to be a revered part of the culture of Houston, a respected standard for road races, and a showcase for elite level competition in the United States.

Goals

Promote a culture of quality, integrity, and safety within the HMC

Utilize innovative thinking and technology as well as sound fiscal strategies to ensure responsible growth and development of the event

Maintain a prominent and admired presence throughout the greater Houston area

Provide an opportunity for runners of all levels to participate in races that are of appropriate size and of the highest caliber

Become an attractive running destination nationally and internationally, renowned for superior organization, innovation, and unsurpassed hospitality

Stage respected elite level competitions

Promote charitable giving

Support a self-sustaining foundation benefitting the event constituency
