Athens Exchange Program

About the Houston-Athens Marathon Exchange

The Houston-Athens Marathon Exchange is the only program of its type in the United States. Each year, the program sends one male and one female finisher of the Chevron Houston Marathon to Greece for a week and provides them with entry into the Athens Classic Marathon. The winners are determined by a random drawing of male and female finishers from the Houston area who have completed the Chevron Houston Marathon in four hours or less.

Congratulations to our 2010 winners: Carol Schmidt (Houston) and Mark Girouard (Galveston)!

Friends, family and other runners who wish to participate in the trip are invited to do so. Information on the cost of the trip, an itinerary and information about the Athens Classic Marathon can be found below.

The Houston-Athens Exchange also sponsors an annual Greek Pastichio dinner to support the program. More information can be found below.

Trip Details

Those interested will depart on Sunday, October 24, 2010 and return Monday, November 1, 2010. The cost of the trip will be approximately $3,000 (based on double occupancy, including roundtrip airfare from Houston to Athens, sightseeing in Athens, airport transfers, hotel, entry fee to Athens Classical Marathon and four-day cruise). A deposit of $500 will need to be paid by April 5, 2010 and final payment will be due on August 31, 2010.

This is the same trip that two runners from the Chevron Houston Marathon were awarded as prizes in the random drawing for finishing the marathon in January 2010 in four hours or less. All are welcome to join the two winners of the 2010 prize.

Annual Pastichio Dinner

Since the beginning of the Houston-Athens Marathon Exchange, volunteers have sponsored an annual pastichio or Greek pasta dinner on the Thursday night prior to the Houston Marathon. Funds from this dinner, which includes pastichio, Greek salad and baklava, are used to defray the costs of sending the runners from Houston to Athens.

Admission to the dinner, which includes one complimentary beverage is $20 in advance or $25 at the door, and $10 for children under 12.

For more information, please contact Anthony Kouzounis, co-chairman of the Houston/Athens Marathon Exchange, at 713-522-2300 or akouzounis@yahoo.com.
