Pink Ribbons Project was founded by a group of dancers who were individually touched by breast cancer. Through that experience and perspective we have to believe that dance and the other arts:
- can educate and inform the mind in ways that traditional methods cannot
- can move people to action
- can inspire and lift the spirits of those with breast cancer
- can help heal the bodies of those fighting breast cancer
Our mission statement reflects these beliefs: Using the arts, Pink Ribbons Project promotes breast health, saves lives and improves the quality of life for those touched by breast cancer. Please join our team and make a difference in the lives of many women and men. Together we can save lives from this disease. We will see you on race day at our new hoopla station location off...Amazon Grill on Kirby.
In 1995, Jane Weiner, a professional dancer in New York City, learned that her sister in Houston, Susan Rafte had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Jane joined with friends and fellow dancers David Parker, Sara Hook and Robin Staff to found Pink Ribbons Project, in motion against breast cancer®. Together they produced a fundraiser in New York City to raise money to send breast cancer survivors to testify in Congressional hearings in Washington D.C. That testimony helped to convince the FDA to approve three new cancer-fighting drugs. One of those drugs was Taxotere, a drug Susan would take the next year and which allowed her to improve enough to receive a stem cell transplant in 1997. Today, Susan now a 15 year cancer survivor works with Jane, the Artistic Director, to educate women about this disease through the medium of dance and art. Pink Ribbons Project® raises money for breast cancer education, screening, advocacy and outreach.
